The Press Institute of Bangladesh was founded in August 1976 keeping the following objectives in view:

• To provide in-service training to working journalists and media personnel working under the Government or any local authority to help raise the country’s standard of journalism.
• To undertake research on mass communication and publish collected data.
• To provide advisory and consultancy services to any newspaper or news agency
• To establish contact with other organizations, both national and international, having functions similar to those mentioned in the above paragraphs.
• To set up a well-equipped reference center for the benefit of the profession.
• To set up to morgue with a microfilm unit and a newspaper reference center.
• To advise the Government on any matter relating to press that may be referred to it by the Government.
• To do such other acts and things as may be necessary to be done for the uplift of the standard of journalism in Bangladesh.
