Background
[

]
Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB)
introduced Post-Graduate Diploma in
Journalism from academic year 2002-2001.
A new aspect of Journalism training and
education emerged immediately after
independence of Bangladesh. There was a
tremendous urge for establishing a National
Press Institute to improve overall standard
of journalism and mass communication in the
country. In continuation to that, PIB was
established in 1976 following a government
resolution. Since its inception PIB had an
objective to introduce long-term training
courses side by side conducting short
courses. With that perspectives, PIB
introduced the Post-Graduate Diploma course.
Despite many constraints, PIB has been
working to raise the professional quality of
working journalists and secure national and
international recognition through continued
training, research and publication. The
field of journalism, like many other
countries, is well stretched now in
Bangladesh. Once upon a time there was no
institution to impart journalism training
and education in the country. Dhaka
University, considering the need to extend
formal education, opened the Department of
Mass Communication and Journalism in the
sixties as the scope of journalism began to
progress further as a profession.
The department first began with only a
diploma course in journalism. Later, Honors
and Masters degree in Mass Communication and
journalism were introduced to cope with the
increasing urge and aspiration of the
students. Other universities of the country
followed Dhaka University gradually.
At one stage, the scope of studying
journalism for students of other disciplines
and the working journalists was blocked as
the university authorities discontinued
diploma and preliminary courses in Mass
communication and Journalism. Besides, many
students were left out of the scope of
studying journalism due to limited number of
seats at university level. PIB, being deeply
guided by the spirit to fill in the void,
has taken the initiative to introduce a
10-month Post-graduate Diploma course at the
special moment of its stepping into 25 years
with a view to fulfill the long cherished
eagerness of the working journalists.
It is expected that, with the beginning of
this course, PIB would be able to
materialize one of its commitments made at
the time of its inception.
